[Germany] The Berlin Graduate School Muslim Cultures and Societies Scholarships

Funded by the Excellence Initiative of the German Federal and State Governments will admit fifteen PhD students to its doctoral programme to begin October 1, 2008. Ten of these candidates will receive a Graduate School grant.

The Graduate School investigates the plurality, changeability, and global connectedness of Muslim cultures and societies. It invites applications from candidates whose dissertation project fits one of the Graduate School’s Research Areas. Successful applicants will have a master’s degree in one of the disciplines represented at the Graduate School, with a ranking, where applicable, of above average.

The language of communication is English. Admission is for one year, and, contingent upon a positive evaluation after the first year of study, will be extended for a total of three years.

The application package will include the following documents: a completed application form; an outline of the dissertation project (up to 6 pages, with a brief summary); a curriculum vitae; two letters of reference; certified copies of degrees received; evidence of proficiency in the language(s) relevant to the dissertation project; and for non-native speakers of English, proof of proficiency in English.

European Grants for Masters Students in Advanced Robotics

The European Union supports the masters course EMARO (European master on Advanced Robotics) by offering 18 attractive scholarships (2 years with 21000 €/year) for Non- European students and one grant for Western Balkan students. It offers also some grants (1,2 or 3 months) for Non- European scholars (academics).

The deadline of application is 31 January 2008. The Master has been accepted in the framework of the prestigious European programme on education “Erasmus Mundus”. The consortium conducting the Master is composed of three institutions: Ecole Centrale de Nantes (France), University of Genova (Italy) and Warsaw University of Technology (Poland).


Duration of studies is two years. The student spends each of those years in a different institution, thus he or she obtains two master’s diplomas of those two institutions. Langue of instruction is English.

PhD Position in Experimental Condensed Matter Physics

The Laboratory of Nanostrucrures and Novel Electronic Materials at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Lausanne (Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne, EPFL) invites applications for a Ph.D. position in experimental solid state physics. The successful candidate will use electrical transport measurements (resistivity, Hall-effect and thermopower) under high pressure to study novel electronic materials like high temperature superconductors, manganites, vanadates etc. Further information on the laboratory can be obtained at http://nanotubes.epfl.ch.


Requirements:
An M.S. or M.A. in physics is required. Preference will be given to candidates with a strong undergraduate background condensed matter physics and experience in laboratory work. Since the language used at the doctoral school of EPFL is English, applicants whose first language is not English should demonstrate their English proficiency. Working knowledge of French is an advantage.

[Switzerland] PhD student position in air quality modeling

The Paul Scherrer Institut is a centre for multi-disciplinary research and one of the world’s leading user laboratories. With its 1200 employees it belongs as an autonomous institution to the Swiss ETH domain and concentrates its activities on solid-state research and material sciences, elementary particle and astrophysics, energy and environmental research as well as on biology and medicine.

The Laboratory of Atmospheric Chemistry (LAC) is engaged in air quality and climate research by field studies, smog chamber experiments and chemical transport models.

We are offering a PhD Student position in the field of Air quality modeling. The chemical composition of particulate matter was recently measured and analyzed in several field campaigns at different locations in unprecedented detail. This provides a unique opportunity to evaluate 3-dimensional photochemical models including emissions, meteorological transport, gasphase and aerosol chemistry.


The challenges are on the one hand to get the boundary layer meteorological processes right on the other hand to get the emissions right. Recent research has shown that one also needs to revisit the assumptions concerning the formation processes leading to secondary organic aerosols.

The project will focus on aerosol formation processes in Switzerland and Europe. An intensive collaboration is planned with another PhD student focusing on meteorology and with a Canadian research group. A competitive Salary will be available.

Your tasks
Use the meteorological models MM5 and/or the Alpine Model (aLMo) in combination with the chemical transport model CAMx in various configurations
Improve the gaseous emissions, e.g. concerning biogenic sesqui-terpene emissions
Improve the primary aerosol emissions (especially from domestic wood burning)
Use and/or develop new schemes to represent the secondary organic aerosol formation in an appropriate manner (2)
Test and evaluate the model versus various available and new data sets
Present the results at workshops, conferences and in peer-reviewed journals

Your profile

You have a master/diploma degree in atmospheric science, meteorology, physics, chemistry or environmental science. Ideally, you already have some experience in meteorological or air quality modeling. Programming and computer skills are crucial. Good communication skills in English are required and in German beneficial.
