Role:
Reporting to the Wireless

Sensor Network R&D activity leader and WSN NAP project co-ordinator the candidate will:

The ideal candidate will have 2 to 3 years Engineering/ Research experience in the development of wireless sensor systems incorporating RF system simulation and design, embedded software development, and wireless sensor system test. The successful candidate will be a key member of a team with expertise in microsystems technology, wireless sensors, electronics and low power system design. Relevant experience in an industrial context would be particularly valuable.

The successful applicant should have a degree in Electronic or Electrical Engineering or a related discipline and a postgraduate degree in an area relevant to the above theme. Authorship of quality publications and/or patents would be a major advantage as would practical knowledge and experience of electronic system design. Experience in co-ordinating the activities of researchers in different fields to bring solutions from the concept stage to a working demonstrator would also be beneficial.

Experience with the PADS design suite (or equivalent), HFSS (or equivalent), RF circuit simulation and strong programming skills are considered essential skills for the applicant.

The person will need to have experience with software development for microcontrollers on PCs (windows) and will need to be able to analyse sets of data. The person should be dependable and resourceful. A knowledge of C programming and microcontroller embedded software development is required. Knowledge of TinyOS and the BioMobius software suite would be of benefit. Hands on experience in the area of miniaturisation development techniques and High Density Packaging (HDP) design would be advantageous.

Excellent communication skills are essential. A proven ability to work well in a team and to lead small teams is desirable. The need to work flexible hours is required and to be adaptable in working practice is essential.

Researcher - High-k Materials (Ref. No. AQ - 08) (Tyndall National Institute)

Developments in the field of information and communication technologies are driven to a large extent by continuing innovations and scaling of complementary metal oxide semiconductor field effect transistor (CMOS) technologies. As the minimum dimensions of devices are reducing to 50 nm and below, the scaling of microelectronic devices is entering a new era, where the basic properties of the materials are themselves the limit to further reductions in the dimensions of the basic building blocks of integrated circuits. One of the main research areas for the development of CMOS beyond the 22 nm node is to explore new gate oxide materials beyond HfO2 and to fabricate MOSFETS on high mobility substrates, such as Ge and InGaAs.

The aim of this post doctoral position is two-fold:
1) to investigate defects in alternative high-k materials using inelastic electron tunneling spectroscopy (IETS).

2) The formation and characterisation of high-k gate MOS and MOSFET structures on germanium.

This is an exciting and developing research area, with a high importance to industry. The position is funded by Science Foundation Ireland, through the Strategic Research Cluster FORME (www.tyndall. ie/forme), in collaboration with INTEL, Dublin City University and Queens University Belfast.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

1. Fabrication of high-k materials) on Si and Ge and substrates by e-beam and atomic layer deposition.
2. To study a range of surface passivation approaches for the deposition of high-k materials on Ge.
3. Electrical and physical characterization of the metal/high-k/ semiconductor structures fabricated in (1) and (2), with particular emphasis on the use of IETS.
4. To contribute to conference and journal publications as co-author and first author.
5. Presentation of results at project meetings, and preparation of project reports.
6. To help with the supervise research students and undergraduate project students.

Nanocrystal- molecule Assemblies for Sensing - Formation, Electrical Interfacing and Charge Transport Mechanisms (Ref. No. AQ - 09) (Cork, Ireland)

Molecular electronics offers the potential for formation of radically new nanoscale electronic devices, with novel properties. A key challenge in the field lies in forming reliable electrical contacts to functional molecules (1-5 nanometre length scale) using techniques that could ultimately be compatible with manufacturing. We propose a hybrid approach for controlled assembly of molecular structures and networks between lateral contact electrodes (from nanometre to micron length scales) using metal nanocrystals as terminals or nodes connected by single functional molecules or biomolecules. The electrical characteristics of these structures and networks will be probed to demonstrate the potential for sensing and integration into a simple flow-cell format, ultimately targetting point-of-care applications in diagnostics.

How To Write a Thank You Letter For a Scholarship?

Crafting a sincere and well-written thank you letter is not difficult, if you keep in mind a few suggestions.
Use plain white stationery or note paper. No cutesy pads with kittens or flowers, !

If you have been lucky to get a scholarship for college or graduate studies, why not take a few moments and express your gratitude to the person, relatives, or entity providing that scholarship? Sending a thank-you letter reflects positively on you as the recipient. It shows you have social grace and skills. It is also important to the donors, who need to know more about the person they have helped to accomplish the formidable objective of a college education.

Use plain white stationery or note paper. No cutesy pads with kittens or flowers, !
If your handwriting is legible, a handwritten note is a lovely touch. But if your cursive looks more like a Dali line drawing, best to type your note.
If you do select to handwrite your note, consider placing the stationery over a piece of lined laptop paper, if the lines show through, or using a straightedge in order to keep your written lines running more or less straight across the page.
Do not use email. Most donors prefer an old-fashioned "snail mail" approach.
Be prompt. Don't wait long to send your thanks after you've been notified of your scholarship. Promptness communicates true gratitude and is basically lovely form.
Address the letter to the donor or the person who donated the funds. It is perfectly proper to call the donor or organization and ask for the name of the person who should get the letter, or you can alternatively check in with your school's financial aid
office.
Start your letter by thanking the donor for donating the funds for the scholarship. Let the donor know what the scholarship means to you, personally. You should not exaggerate your require, but don't shy away from telling a donor that their gift meant the difference between a four-year university and the local technical college for you, if it is true.
Next, tell the donor a tiny about yourself - where you grew up, why you chose the school or major (whichever was the qualifying factor in your scholarship), and where you are in your studies (i.e., prospective freshman, graduating senior, etc.).
Let the donor know what your future designs are. What do you intend to do with your degree? Are you planning to teach inner-city children? Volunteer with the Peace Corps? Have you lined up a promising internship next semester? How are you going to give back to the community? Donors like to hear how their gifts lead to greater things.
Thank the donor again.
Sign the note.
Do this for each scholarship you get.
Check with your financial aid office to see if they have any forms or samples you can use for ideas, or if they have special rules or requirements for sending the notes. (Some schools like to transmit the notes in five package, while others leave it up to the student.)

Step 1:

There's types of scholarships that do free you from paying entrance & tuition fees. The scholarship you get covers all your life expenses. There's also scholarships that don't cover the fees. They offer to pay your entrance & first semester tuition fee. On this type, aside from being a student you are also working there. The salary you get every month is then used to gradually pay back the university for fees that they paid you in the first place. Sometimes this type also leaves accommodation to your expense. You need to thoroughly understand what the scholarship program offers you.
Step 2:

After finding the application that suits your desire, learn every detail of it. How much scholarship money do you get, what does it provide (accommodation, tuition fees, life expenses, etc), how long does the program take, & what are the requirements you have to fulfill. Another thing to understand is your status on this scholarship. Are you a full time student or are you also working with a monthly salary? Are the tuition fees fully paid by the university or are you paying it from your salary?

2. Write an appealing curriculum vitae

You have understood details of the scholarship you are about to pursue. Now it's time to construct an appealing CV. Generally, it consists of personal information (name, DOB, address, phone number, & e-mail), educational background, & experiences. It's like advertising your product, if you can generate splendid lines, consumers will be interested & buy it. On pursuing the scholarship, your motivation letter is like an advertisement for your self. You are 'selling' your strengths, skills, achievements & experiences. You can also build a connection, with the professors. So when you finally enter the program you'll find no difficulties finding a person for asking questions.

Whether or not you have gotten notification your submission passed the first review, it's better if you start preparing for the interview. Brush up on more details of the program you applied to, the university you'll enter, & it programs. Make sure you have copied the submission documents before you send it so later on you can read them again.

About the MyCare Project
The MyCare project is a joint initiative of the Computer Science Department of the University of Groningen and of the Department of Psychiatry of the Groningen University Medical Hospital. MyCare aims at building information technology tools to support patients with schizophrenia for personal recovery and risk assessment. The tools are tested with actual patients in a controlled environment. This exciting PhD project combines the creation of innovative software tools with actual medical field work.

The position is financed in the context of the Dutch ZonMW program for medical innovation. Another PhD student will be hired to work on the MyCare project in the field of Psychiatry.
The position is open in the Distributed Systems unit lead by Prof. Marco Aiello in close collaboration with the Intelligent Systems unit lead by Prof. Nicolai Petkov . The University of Groningen is in its 395 year of existence and is ranked among the top 200 worldwide.
Required profile
-You should have a M.Sc. or equivalent in computer science or a related discipline

Conditions of employment

These research fellowships, for a maximum period of nine months, are designed for scholars who are registered for a Ph.D. at an Indian institution and also for professionals with significant work experience and accomplishments.

Preferred fields are: Agricultural Sciences; Business Studies, Management and Leadership Development; Economics; Education; Energy, especially alternative and renewable energy; Environment; Governance and Democracy; Law and Civic Engagement; Media and Communications; Public Administration; Public Health; Science and Technology; Society and Development; Study of India; and Study of the United States. Grant Benefits

These fellowships provide a monthly stipend, Accident and Sickness Program for Exchanges per US Government guidelines, round-trip economy class air travel, applicable allowances and modest affiliation fees, if any. Selected scholars will have opportunities to audit non-degree courses, conduct research and gain practical work experience in suitable settings in the US. No allowances are provided for dependents. The grant is not sufficient to support family members.

Eligibility Requirements
In addition to the General Prerequisites, the applicants:
who are working on their Ph.D.s should have done adequate research in the relevant field, especially in the identification of resources in India and the US. They should be registered for their Ph.D.s at an Indian institution at least one year prior to the date of application and should enclose a certificate from their Ph.D. supervisor commenting on their research work and the usefulness of the fellowship, and indicating the Ph.D. registration date;
who are professionals should have a master’s degree and substantive professional experience in the proposed field;

What are the project goals?

The German Academic Exchange Service aims to strengthen cooperation in higher education between Germany, Brazil and countries of ...........

lusophone Africa. To support the mobility of junior scientists from lusophone Africa as well as Brazilian and German lecturers and scientists, such Trilateral Cooperation will be initiated by means of a Pilot Project in 2009. A six-month research stay at German universities will be offered for African Master’s and PhD candidates. At the same time Brazilian and African university teachers and scientists will get the opportunity to carry out their own research projects for up to three months and will supervise and support the young African scientists at participating German universities. Furthermore short-term lectureships will be funded for German scientists in the relevant target regions. In 2010, the Pilot Project will lead to extensive cooperation between the universities and scientists taking part in the project.

What is funded?

1. Short-term Research Scholarships for African Master’s and PhD Candidates

The monthly scholarship instalment for short-term research stays at German universities amounts to a maximum of 1,000 euros over a period of up to six months, plus an additional travel allowance.

2. Research Stays for University Teachers and Scientists from Abroad

The monthly scholarships for university teachers and scientists from Brazil and lusophone Africa, respectively, amount to a maximum of 2,240 euros and are dependent on the applicant’s academic status. A travel allowance is also provided. Funding is limited to a maximum stay of three months at a German university. In addition to their own research activities, the scientists will also support and supervise the African short-term scholarship recipients within the project.

3. Short-term Lectureships for German Scientists

Applications can be submitted for accommodation and subsistence costs of up to 2,137 euros (in Africa) and 2,600 euros (in Brazil) for short-term lectureships by German scientists in both target regions. In addition a travel allowance will be paid. The funding is limited to a term of one to three months.

4. Support and Supervision Funds for German universities

Upon application, German universities will receive flat-rate funding (amounting to 60 euros per month and scholarship recipient) to supervise and tutor the shortterm scholarship recipients within the scope of this project. If more short-term scholarship recipients (minimum of six) are accepted, the respective university may apply for more funding for tutorial means and resources.

5. Material and Organisation Costs

Universities that accept a minimum of six scholarship recipients may, within the scope of the Trilateral Cooperation scheme, apply for the funding of training workshops for lecturers, supervision, etc. Applications for “Cooperation Workshops” are open to universities that clearly show a strong interest in a future Trilateral Cooperation Project. Funding of up to 10,000 euros per workshop can be approved.

Future cooperation between universities in Germany, Brazil, and lusophone Africa are to be initiated and/or structurally consolidated by combining the various mobility components. This initial seed funding is limited to the fiscal year 2009.

Application Deadline

The application deadline for short-term research scholarships, research stays, and short-term lectureships is 22 May 2009 (postal stamp). All necessary papers and documents must be included for consideration of the application. The DAAD will send the invitation to submit the application for Supervision and Support Funding and Material and Organisation Costs to the respective universities as from July 2009.

These scholarships are offered under the research project “EOIA: An Earth Observation? and Integrated Assessment approach to the Governance of Lake Naivasha” is funded by the Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research under the WOTRO ?Global Science for Development Programme

The project will be implemented jointly by Egerton University (Kenya), and the International Institute of Geoinformation Science and Earth Observation (ITC, The Netherlands) and the University of Twente (The Netherlands). Collaborating partners are the University of Nairobi (Kenya), University of Leicester (UK) and the University of Bournemouth (UK). The main stakeholders in the project are Water Resources Management Authority (WRMA), Lake Naivasha Growers Group (LNGG), Lake Naivasha Riparian Organisation (LNRA), World Agroforestry Center (ICRAF) and the World Wildlife Fund ? East Africa Regional Programme Office (WWF?EARPO), all based in Kenya.

The research aims at enhancing sustainability in management of water resources and the environment using Lake Naivasha as a pilot case and adopting Integrated Assessment approach to generate lessons and best practices which can be replicated in other catchments in Kenya and in the East Africa region. Major inputs to the assessment include participatory processes and physical and economic models combined with data derived from remote sensing techniques.

Consequently, it is essential that France Telecom possesses means of voice quality assessment as it is a vital aspect for VoIP service provision. Quality should be supervised at the end-point where it presents the most faithful reflection of customer’s perception. However, most of the existing methods seem inadequate for this use. Even though the signal-based measuring methods evaluate well end-to-end quality

Voice quality constitutes the key element of the customer’s feeling and trust towards his telecom operator. Consequently, it is essential that France Telecom possesses means of voice quality assessment as it is a vital aspect for VoIP service provision. Quality should be supervised at the end-point where it presents the most faithful reflection of customer’s perception. However, most of the existing methods seem inadequate for this use. Even though the signal-based measuring methods evaluate well end-to-end quality, their implementation in customer gateways is impossible, mainly because of lack of resources. For the purpose of supervision it is recommended to use parametrical models, such as the E model (ITU-T G.107) or models compliant with ITU-T P.564, which do not require neither complex signal processing nor a reference signal. For practical reasons, France Telecom chose to work on the E-model instead of developing a totally new model.

Nevertheless, our experience regarding the use of the E model in end-point voice quality assessing probes has demonstrated some substantial drawbacks of the model. According to several published tests, the model judges too severely the degradations due to packet loss, jitter and delay, and therefore underpredicts quality. On the other hand, the information about packet loss, jitter and delay is often the only available in an end-point. Therefore, in the first place it is important to construct a new model which will evaluate better the influence of these three factors on quality. However, if time allows we do not exclude the possibility of including other parameters, such as noise or echo.

The most important part of the study will concern the study of the influence of packet loss on voice quality for the purposes of real-time measurement. The impact of certain parameters such as delay or noise has already been studied by France Telecom and elsewhere. It is only required to integrate them into one unique quality evaluation model. We would also like, that the model took into account dynamic phenomena such as recency effect. At the end, the model should evaluate quality score in narrow band (300-3400 Hz) as well as wide band (50-7000 Hz) on a single, mixed, quality scale.

In order to construct the model the creation of new subjective databases will be necessary. Some work can be based on objective tests (PESQ), using the test chain which has been developed in our team.

A validation of the performance of the model (formally at the end of the development, but also probably on intermediate versions) is necessary. In particular, the use of the method described in ITU-T P.564 will be deeply appreciated.

Duties include helping with subject recruitment, running experiments (brain imaging and behavioural studies) and contributing to data analysis.

An undergraduate degree in psychology, neuroscience, computer science, mathematics or a related discipline would be a pre-requisite, and evidence of strong quantitative skills in computer programming, mathematics and statistics would be essential. Some prior exposure to cognitive, behavioural or computational neuroscience would be an advantage. The project will be carried out using state of the art MRI facilities at the Trinity College Institute of Neuroscience, Trinity College Dublin, Ireland. One part of the project, focusing on fMRI studies of the role of risk during human decision-making, will be completed under the direction of Prof. Ernst Fehr and Kerstin Preuschoff at the Institute for Empirical Research in Economics in Zurich. We are presently seeking applicants for the positions of post-doctoral researcher and PhD student.

These positions require a background in neurobiology, economics, psychology or computer science, and an interest in neuroeconomics and/or mathematical modeling of behavioral and neuroimaging data. Previous experience in neuroimaging techniques and fMRI data analysis is a major advantage. Candidates should have an interest in designing and conducting experiments in neuroeconomics and social neuroscience. Finally, candidates should have programming experience, e.g. in MATLAB or similar languages.

This DPhil studentship will start on 1 October 2009, is available to all nationalities, covers maintenance and full overseas fees and will be based in the newly established Oxford Centre for Collaborative Applied Mathematics (OCCAM).

OCCAM has been established with substantial funding from the KAUST GRP. The Centre, which is part of the Mathematical Institute, will be allied to a global network of mathematicians. Aiming to meet the ever-increasing global demand for quantitative understanding of complex scientific phenomena, OCCAM has been built on the strength of four pre-existing groups of applied and computational mathematicians working in Oxford: the Oxford Centre for Industrial and Applied Mathematics, the Centre for Mathematical Biology, the Numerical Analysis Group and the Computational Biology Group. It has a symbiotic relationship with other scientific communities which have a need for problem-solving mathematics both within the University of Oxford and beyond. Over the first five years the centre will employ 40 new staff and students.

Coronary heart disease remains the leading cause of death in the western world. Recent advances in high performance computing and medical imaging have lead to the development of detailed models of vascular structure and blood flow respectively. These techniques now enable the simulation of perfusion through three dimensional representations of vascular geometry. However, there are two difficulties with these classes of models: (1) the computational simulation of flow through complete vascular beds from feeding vessels to capillaries is computationally prohibitive and (2) it is impossible to measure flow in all vessels and thus fully validate such models for clinical application. Recent developments in Perfusion MRI and Nuclear Medicine by our clinical collaborators at St Thomas’ Hospital now provide the ability to accurately measure blood volume in cardiac tissue. This presents an opportunity to develop a novel modelling framework to explicitly address these limitations by linking vascular structure to whole organ perfusion through the application of a multi-scale porous-flow model.

The goal of this project will be to develop models with the potential to directly interpret clinically acquired perfusion images and guide revascularisation strategies in the heart. The methodology will be based on homogenizing discrete vascular structures by applying previously developed asymptotic approach. A key mathematical challenge will be adapting the multiple scales technique to the hierarchical branching structure of blood vessels. This may lead to a continuum sub-model for each generation of vessel (e.g. capillaries, arterioles, small/large coronary vessels) which are coupled to produce a full multi-domain and multi-scale representational of coronary perfusion. These predicted perfusion fields will be mathematically validated via comparison with the perfusion fields determined using the discrete model whose structure was used to define the porosity tensor. Finally the model will be applied to human data collected at St Thomas’ to assess the clinical potential of the approach.

The collaborators on this project are Professor Jos Spaan (Department Medical Physics, University of Amsterdam) and Professor Eike Nagel (Guy’s and St Thomas’ Hospital).

The Cluster of Excellence “Asia and Europe in a Global Context: Shifting Asymmetries in Cultural Flows” at the University of Heidelberg is offering;

2 PhD scholarships within the Junior Research Group “Asymmetries in Cultural Information Flows: Europe and South Asia in the Global Information Network since the Nineteenth Century”.

The PhD students will be expected to develop a PhD project with the Junior Research Group’s research focus. The research group primarily examines how the emergence of a global telecommunication network in the late nineteenth century altered information flow patterns between South Asia and Europe and transformed action and event horizons on both sides of the communication process.

The PhD students will work within the framework of these subprojects:

“‘Telegram Style’: Shifts in Transcultural Knowledge and Colonial Decision-Taking” (British colonial history, South Asian history and/or communication studies)

Reducing carbon dioxide emissions is considered to be the most effective way of tackling the effects of global warming. This will require the large-scale capture, transportation and storage of CO2. In the case of coal fired power generation plants, pressurised pipelines are considered to be the most practical, and possibly the only option for transporting the captured CO2 for subsequent storage.

Given the enormous amounts of CO2 contained in such pipelines (typically several million tonnes), a prior knowledge of the release rate and subsequent dispersion in the event of pipeline rupture is central to assessing the failure impact. CO2 is toxic and when inhaled in large concentrations can lead to asphyxiation.

This exciting PhD project aims to extend our award winning work to develop a computer based model for predicting the failure consequences of CO2 pipelines. The project carried out in close collaboration with a major industrial partner is multidisciplinary involving a variety of subjects including, fluid mechanics, mathematics, heat transfer, quantitative risk assessment and computing. The experience gained is expected to equip theprospective PhD graduate with job opportunities in a variety of industrial sectors particularly in the oil and gas industry.

The successful candidate will be an outstanding First Class Chemical Engineering or Mathematics graduate (although other relevant disciplines will be considered) preferably with computing skills. The funding covers full tuition fees plus maintenance over three years and is open to suitably qualified overseas students.

The project is a cooperation between research groups at the University of Bergen and SINTEF ICT in Oslo. The candidate will participate in an international research network devoted to the development of analytical and numerical tools to be used in risk assessment analysis of geological storage of CO2. The candidate will in particular focus on the development of streamline methods for simulating CO2 injection. We seek a candidate with background from some of the fields: numerical analysis and programming, differential equations, and reservoir modelling and simulation. Scholarships
Selection criteria

Applicants will be selected based on their previous academic career and on their Curriculum Vitae.

Amount of the scholarship
The gross amount of the Alessandria Campus scholarship is 10.000 Euro for the complete period. The exact net sum is dependent upon the individual tax conditions of each student, which can be verified only upon the arrival of the student.
The amount of the scholarship will not be increased in case the student will need more time to graduate than indicated.
The allocation of the scholarship is dependent upon the submission, within 10 days from the arrival in Italy of the student, of the original documentation, which must correspond with the documentation attached to the online form (see the “Selection outcomes” section below).
Payment of the scholarship occurs periodically. The first instalment is dependent upon the possession of the relevant documentation (residence permit, Italian fiscal code, and bank account in the name of the scholarship recipient), all obtainable upon arrival in Italy; for this reason, the first instalment is not paid at the moment of arrival at the Politecnico di Torino, but in the course of the following month.

Requirements to maintain the scholarship
Given that it is not possible to combine the benefits received from more than one scholarship, students who are assigned another study grant while receiving the Alessandria Campus scholarship must promptly notify the Politecnico di Torino.
Payment of the scholarship will be suspended if the academic performance of the recipient does not meet a satisfactory level.

Conditions of eligibility for tuition fee waiver

The student must have a four-year Bachelor of Engineering/Science degree with at least the equivalent of Honours, Class 1.
The student must have sufficient English language proficiency at the time of enrolment to meet the University’s entry requirements (IETLS: 6.5 overall, with 6 in writing).
The student must be enrolled 100% through the School of Engineering.
The principal supervisor must fund a full stipend at least equivalent to the current APA rate.

Rosalind Franklin Fellowships at the Faculty of Law At the Faculty of Law, two Rosalind Franklin Fellowships are available for talented female researchers. Research and education in the Faculty of Law is carried out in the fields of constitutional law, international law, european law, criminal law, public law, civil law, company law, tax law, and a variety of interdisciplinary fields, like law and economics, philosophy of law, sociology of law, and history of law (see Faculty website, www.rug.nl/rechten). European Grants for Masters Students in Advanced Robotics

The European Union supports the masters course EMARO (European master on Advanced Robotics) by offering 18 attractive scholarships (2 years with 21000 €/year) for Non- European students and one grant for Western Balkan students. It offers also some grants (1,2 or 3 months) for Non- European scholars (academics).

The deadline of application is 31 January 2008. The Master has been accepted in the framework of the prestigious European programme on education “Erasmus Mundus”. The consortium conducting the Master is composed of three institutions: Ecole Centrale de Nantes (France), University of Genova (Italy) and Warsaw University of Technology (Poland).

Duration of studies is two years. The student spends each of those years in a different institution, thus he or she obtains two master’s diplomas of those two institutions. Langue of instruction is English.

PhD Position in Experimental Condensed Matter Physics

The Laboratory of Nanostrucrures and Novel Electronic Materials at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Lausanne (Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne, EPFL) invites applications for a Ph.D. position in experimental solid state physics. An M.S. or M.A. in physics is required. Preference will be given to candidates with a strong undergraduate background condensed matter physics and experience in laboratory work. The Paul Scherrer Institut is a centre for multi-disciplinary research and one of the world’s leading user laboratories. With its 1200 employees it belongs as an autonomous institution to the Swiss ETH domain and concentrates its activities on solid-state research and material sciences, elementary particle and astrophysics, energy and environmental research as well as on biology and medicine.

The Laboratory of Atmospheric Chemistry (LAC) is engaged in air quality and climate research by field studies, smog chamber experiments and chemical transport models.

We are offering a PhD Student position in the field of Air quality modeling. The chemical composition of particulate matter was recently measured and analyzed in several field campaigns at different locations in unprecedented detail. This provides a unique opportunity to evaluate 3-dimensional photochemical models including emissions, meteorological transport, gasphase and aerosol chemistry.

The challenges are on the one hand to get the boundary layer meteorological processes right on the other hand to get the emissions right. Recent research has shown that one also needs to revisit the assumptions concerning the formation processes leading to secondary organic aerosols.

The project will focus on aerosol formation processes in Switzerland and Europe. An intensive collaboration is planned with another PhD student focusing on meteorology and with a Canadian research group. A competitive Salary will be available.

Your tasks
Use the meteorological models MM5 and/or the Alpine Model (aLMo) in combination with the chemical transport model CAMx in various configurations
Improve the gaseous emissions, e.g. concerning biogenic sesqui-terpene emissions
Improve the primary aerosol emissions (especially from domestic wood burning)
Use and/or develop new schemes to represent the secondary organic aerosol formation in an appropriate manner (2)
Test and evaluate the model versus various available and new data sets
Present the results at workshops, conferences and in peer-reviewed journals

Your profile

You have a master/diploma degree in atmospheric science, meteorology, physics, chemistry or environmental science. Ideally, you already have some experience in meteorological or air quality modeling. Programming and computer skills are crucial. Good communication skills in English are required and in German beneficial.

Objectives of Eiffel programme
Eiffel excellence scholarships are awarded to high-achieving overseas students to whom French centres of higher education would like to offer a place on a Master’s or PhD course. The courses taken by these students in France ultimately target positions of responsibility in the public or private sector, rather than careers in teaching or research.

The French Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs gives priority to candidates from emerging countries (starting with Asia, Latin America, Eastern Europe, the Middle East and new members of the European Union), though the PhD scholarships also address students from industrialized countries.

Applications from students currently studying outside France will be given priority over those from students already studying in France.Areas of study covered by the Eiffel programme
Eiffel grants cover the following subject areas:
Engineering sciences for the Master’s course, and sciences in a broader sense for the PhD course (engineering sciences, exact sciences (mathematics, physics, chemistry) life sciences, nano- and bio-technologies, environment sciences, and information & communication sciences).

Academic levels covered by the Eiffel programme
French centres of higher education putting forward candidates for Eiffel scholarships undertake to enrol successful applicants on one of the following types of course:
Master’s course
PhD course co-tutored or co-managed with partner higher education centre in the student’s country of origin

Candidates must not be aged over 30 (in the year of selection) for a Master’s scholarship or over 35 for a PhD scholarship.

Ineligibility factors
Holders of other French government grants (including welfare coverage grants),
Previous applicants for Eiffel grants, even in a different subject,
Applicants not presented by a French centre (i.e. applications by students themselves, or submitted by a non-French centre)
Duplicate applications, i.e. students proposed by more than one French centre.

Incomplete applications will not be considered. Applications must be submitted with all the supporting documents listed on page 5 of the application form, and bear the official seal of the French higher education centre plus the signature of the official head of the centre (university dean, school director, etc.), formally certifying the statement of the centre’s international outreach policy. The quality charter must also be initialled separately to mark formal acceptance.

Application procedure
Applications for Eiffel grants are submitted by French higher education centres from a shortlist of outstanding students they would like to enrol on their courses. Applications are not accepted from students themselves, or from non-French centres.

Centres submit applications on behalf of candidate students consistent with programme objectives, in accordance with instructions and guidelines issued by French Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Selection procedure
Selection is performed by a commission made up of three specialist committees (one for each of the three subject areas covered by the programme). Committee members are not allowed to assess applications submitted by their own centres.

Committee members are not allowed to assess applications submitted by centres with which they have professional links.

Selection is to three criteria:
Academic excellence of applicant, as attested by achievement to date (rated on a scale of 10 and weighted with a coefficient of 3).
International policy of centre submitting application, operations addressing the geographical region in question, calibre of host unit, and suitability with regard to the application (rated on a scale of 5 and weighted to a coefficient of 3).
Cooperation policy of French Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs, especially as regards the priorities set for different countries under the programme (rated on a scale of 5 and weighted to a coefficient of 1).

The commission assesses applications, rates them to these three criteria, and applies the weighting coefficients to produce a score out of 50. It then sets a pass mark and selects nominees to the following principles, on the basis of the number of grants available:
At least seventy percent of the grants are awarded to the highest-scoring applicants (main list).
The remainder go to higher education centres whose nominees scored above the pass mark but were not selected on the main list.

The commission then draws up and publishes the list of successful applicants.

Notification of results
The list of successful applicants will be published on-line (www.egide.asso.fr/eiffel).

Results will be notified to the heads of the higher education centres concerned.

The commission’s decision is final, and no discussion will be entertained regarding this decision or the reasons behind it.

The schedule for the 2008 Eiffel programme is as follows:

Results are published in March to enable students to give the French offer full consideration along with any other offers they might have; the best students will often have competing proposals (including offers on funding their studies) from other countries.

Duration of Eiffel scholarship
Master’s course: The Eiffel scholarship is awarded for the duration of the course culminating in the qualification specified in the application, provided the student fulfils the academic requirements of each year.

Upon request by the French host centre, Eiffel scholarship allowances for non-French-speaking students may be extended to cover preliminary French language training of up to one year.

The centre submitting the application must clearly state the overall programme duration, including any compulsory practical courses or internships in France or elsewhere.

PhD course: The Eiffel scholarship is awarded for a maximum of ten months, with no additional language training period.

Amount of Eiffel scholarship
The Eiffel programme does not cover tuition fees (except for preparatory course in French, if applicable), though the higher education centres concerned are invited to apply the best possible financial conditions to Eiffel scholarship-holders.

Enrolment fees at state-run higher education centres are waived for students on French government scholarship programmes such as this.

Master’s courses: Eiffel scholarship-holders on Master’s courses receive a monthly allowance of EUR1,181. In addition, the programme meets various expenses including return travel, health insurance and cultural activities. Scholarship-holders might also be eligible for additional accommodation allowance.

PhD courses: Eiffel scholarship-holders on PhD courses receive a monthly allowance of EUR1,400. In addition, the programme meets various expenses including return travel, health insurance and cultural activities. Scholarship-holders might also be eligible for additional accommodation allowance.

If they wish, higher education centres may contact French diplomatic services (cooperation and cultural departments) for assistance in identifying potentially suitable applicants.
