Wireless Sensor Networks Applications Engineer (Ref. No. BOF - 19) (Cork, Ireland)

University College Cork, Tyndall National Institute invites applications for an appointment as Applications Engineer/Researcher to develop, design and implement microelectronics systems to enable research within the Tyndall National Institute and nationally in a variety of academic institutions working in the area of Wireless Sensor Networking (WSN). This work will be carried out as part of Tyndall’s National Access Program (NAP) funded by Science Foundation Ireland (SFI).

Tyndall National Institute (Tyndall), www.tyndall. ie, is Ireland’s largest research centre, specialising in defined areas of Information and Communications Technology (ICT). Within Tyndall, the WSN team is developing wireless sensor network solutions as part of the NAP program to meet the research requirements of academics in Ireland. The team has a strong background in developing low power consumption, miniaturised systems, requiring rigorous RF simulation and design as well as embedded software development and system deployment and test. http://www.tyndall. ie/mai/wsn. htm

Role:
Reporting to the Wireless

Sensor Network R&D activity leader and WSN NAP project co-ordinator the candidate will:
• Be responsible for the specification, design and development of wireless sensing solutions utilising commercial off the shelf devices and systems, incorporating system specification, PCB layout, Microcontroller Embedded software design and system test.
• Project management of National Access Program projects.
• Support and contribute to the National Access Program activities.
• Contribute to and/or initiate peer reviewed scientific publications in the area.
• Travel to project meetings to present technical results and project updates.

The ideal candidate will have 2 to 3 years Engineering/ Research experience in the development of wireless sensor systems incorporating RF system simulation and design, embedded software development, and wireless sensor system test. The successful candidate will be a key member of a team with expertise in microsystems technology, wireless sensors, electronics and low power system design. Relevant experience in an industrial context would be particularly valuable.

The successful applicant should have a degree in Electronic or Electrical Engineering or a related discipline and a postgraduate degree in an area relevant to the above theme. Authorship of quality publications and/or patents would be a major advantage as would practical knowledge and experience of electronic system design. Experience in co-ordinating the activities of researchers in different fields to bring solutions from the concept stage to a working demonstrator would also be beneficial.

Experience with the PADS design suite (or equivalent), HFSS (or equivalent), RF circuit simulation and strong programming skills are considered essential skills for the applicant.

The person will need to have experience with software development for microcontrollers on PCs (windows) and will need to be able to analyse sets of data. The person should be dependable and resourceful. A knowledge of C programming and microcontroller embedded software development is required. Knowledge of TinyOS and the BioMobius software suite would be of benefit. Hands on experience in the area of miniaturisation development techniques and High Density Packaging (HDP) design would be advantageous.

Excellent communication skills are essential. A proven ability to work well in a team and to lead small teams is desirable. The need to work flexible hours is required and to be adaptable in working practice is essential.
