[Norway] PhD position available within the project “Reservoir characterization using ensemble Kalman filter”

A three year position as research fellow (PhD position) is available within the project ”Reservoir characterization using ensemble Kalman filter”. The project is funded by the Research Council of Norway and several industry partners. The PhD education will be affiliated with the PhD programme at the University of Bergen and the research will be performed in close cooperation with the “Centre for Integrated Petroleum Research”, one of 21 Norwegian Centres of Excellence.

The main objective of the project is to develop methodology for petroleum reservoir characterization.

Possible research tasks include:
improve the uncertainty quantification provided by the ensemble Kalman filter
develop methodology for history matching in cases with complex geology
increase the understanding of the effect of model error.

The research present challenges from various disciplines including mathematics, statistics, computer science and reservoir engineering.

The successful applicant will spend one year as visiting scholar at the University of Oklahoma or the University of Tulsa.

Skills
The fellowship is open to candidates with a strong background in Mathematics, Physics or related fields. Candidates must hold a MSc degree or equivalent. Excellent academic track record, strong IT skills, familiarity with Unix/Linux and programming experience beyond Visual Basic are desired.

Conditions
Starting salary at salary level 43 (code 1017) on the government salary scale (currently NOK 325 600 per year); following ordinary meriting regulations (wage levels 43/47). The successful applicant must comply with the guidelines that apply to the position at any time and satisfy the admission requirements for the PhD programme at the University of Bergen.
